I have never liked "File Explorer" on Windows. I found the freeware FreeCommander that I like really well although I have customized it quite a bit. It has 2 panes but you can also add tabs to each pane as well. It also has a multiple file renamer that I use a lot. You can download the portable version of the program for free. Then you can replace the "Settings" folder that is included in the download with the one I posted on MediaFire (link below) if you would like to try my customized settings and color schemes.
The portable version is available here. Click on the link below and then click on the link that says "FreeCommanderXE-32-public_portable.zip" to download it:
My settings folder and its contents is here:

FreeCommander has the ability to save different layouts and create a button on the toolbar to load the layout. I added some to my toolbar on the version I use but didn't include them to the folder I posted on MediaFire because your folder locations will be different than mine. You can add this pretty easily. I have one layout for pinball tables, one for E-Media and a standard one that I use for everything else.
Whenever I work on pinball tables, I am always using FreeCommander with Future Pinball (FP) to launch and edit tables, textures and other things. You can open the BAM FP editor or play a table if you set up FP like I show in this tutorial:
